I painted Where Sleeping Dogs Lie alla prima in oils, working wet-into-wet so the background stayed soft and slightly blurred. I wasn’t interested in detailing every part of the room, particularly the background, the aim was to keep the focus on warmth, light, and atmosphere.
 
I live with two tri-colour Cavaliers, Frankie and Finley, and this painting feels very close to home. The relaxed pose and quiet weight of the dog at rest reflect those familiar moments of complete trust and contentment.
 
This piece is about peace. A fire quietly burning, a warm rug underfoot, and a dog sleeping without a care. I wanted the painting to hold that sense of calm, the kind that settles in when the house is quiet and the day is done.
