This original oil painting is built on a traditional underpainting, establishing the structure and values first, before gradually bringing in colour. It gives the piece a softness and depth that suits the mood.
 
What caught me with this subject was the quiet concentration. A child completely absorbed in what he’s making, unaware of anything else around him.  This painting also feels very close to home. It reminds me of my own son at that age,  fair hair lit by the sun, hands covered in sand and water, building and rebuilding without a second thought. Those moments that feel ordinary at the time, but stay with you.
 
There’s a calmness in this piece that I keep coming back to. It holds onto a time that slips by far too quickly, this is a painting for anyone who wants to hold onto that feeling a little longer.
